Hi Belinda,

I would appreciate you sending this on to the Brains Trust for their consideration. Maybe they can respond to me directly by email?

We are getting the usual rush of applications for installation of solid fuel heaters.

We have been issuing the approvals with the requirement that a 400 mm clearance be maintained between the front of the heater and the furthest part of the hearth, and 400 mm between the sides of the heater and the furthest edge of the hearth. This is directly out of the BCA Cl. 3.7.3.5 (c), and diagram at Fig. 3.7.3.4.

A local solid fuel heater supplier/installer has queried the side clearance figure, pointing out that virtually all manufacturers show 200mm on their installation details. (I would point out that the same details also show 300m from the front of the appliance to the edge of the hearth, so seems that he manufacturers are not keeping up with the BCA changes)

How are other shires tackling their approvals? Installation as per Manufacturers’ details? Or compliance with the current BCA?. I note that AS /NZ 2918:2001 still refers to 300mm front, 200mm sides.

II have no problem with the increase in distance from the front of the appliance to the edge of the hearth, but the increase from 200 to 400 from the side has created situation where a great deal of pre-manufactured hearths no longer comply. I don’t see any dispensation even if the manufacturer has had the appliance tested. That only relates to the distance from the rear of the appliance and adjacent wall.
